Most Americans are still cowardly, unpatriotic, cut-and-run surrender monkeys

Despite all the rhetoric to the contrary from most of the Republican presidential candidates, most of the blunderbusses on talk radio and the entire right wing of the blogosphere, most Americans still think the war in Iraq is wrong and want our troops withdrawn.

Oh, and most folks also expect that Gen. David Petraeus will be peddling exaggerations, if not falsehoods, when he reports to Congress next week on how the war is going.

Here's the skinny from the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The right wing spin machine must be working. Look at the pols that are being trumpeted now.

Indeed, the CBS news headline on that poll reads: "Poll: More Think The 'Surge' Is Helping." But when you examine the poll numbers, you find that 57 percent of respondents DO NOT think the surge has "made things better" in Iraq. The headline, then, is grossly misleading. It merely reflects an uptick -- from 29 percent to 35 percent -- in Americans who take a positive view of the surge. That difference of 6 percentage points is not much greater than the poll's 3-percentage-point margin of error. The New York Times, which co-sponsored the poll with CBS, reported that solid majorities of respondents said the war was a mistake to begin with and is not worth the loss of American lives.
