That's probably because the sane members of the Republican Party have been fleeing the GOP ever since George W. Bush decided that imposing his will by pre-emptively invading Iraq and running it into the ground was his divine destiny. Smart people tend not to associate with megalomaniacal delusionals...especially those who have well-established track records of failure.
So it's hardly surprising that the majority of the ones who are left tend to believe in fraud and superstition instead of science. Just look at the leader they support.
