Chickenhawk dad praises chickenhawk sons

Mitt Romney (shown here counting the number of his five sons who are serving in the military) says his boys serve their country in another way -- by pushing his presidential candidacy.

All of Romney's sons are of military age, and their dad is a big backer of the war in Iraq. So, since they're backing dad's candidacy, they, too, are backing the war. But they just can't bring themselves to participate in it.

Back in the day, their dad was a backer of the Vietnam war and....you guessed it, he didn't serve in the military, either.

Republicans believe military service is by and large for folks in the lower economic class. Romney's family isn't any different than the hawkish Republicans in the executive branch. Bush has two daughters who could serve, if they wish. Cheney dodged the Vietnam war. Rascal, seen any data on how many current members of congress have children in the service, and their party affiliation?

I have only anecdotal info on that subject. Democratic Sen. Jim Webb has a son in Iraq. John McCain's son is in the Marine Corps and is expected to be sent to Iraq. It's also my understanding that there are more military veterans among Democrats in Congress than among Republicans. By the way, elsewhere in the blogosphere, ROmney's five sons have been compared unfavorably to the five Sullivan brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, who famously were killed on a Navy ship on Nov. 13, 1942, during World War II. That was four days after I was born, and their father, like mine, worked for the Illinois Central Railroad. I think my dad and theirs even knew each other, as my dad had cause to travel often to Waterloo in his work. My dad was killed in a railroad accident 55 years ago.

One more thought on the Romney and Sullivan brothers: The Romneys are touring Iowa in a Winnebago on behalf of their dad's candidacy. I wonder if they'll be stopping in Waterloo.

Joe Biden's son also did at least one tour in Iraq. I wish I knew how many of the leading Neo-Cons actually served. I'll bet not very many.

Henry: You can find a pretty long list of who served and who didn't at this link (which you'll have to cut and paste):

Henry: You might find it easier to simply google this: "who served" chickenhawks. it'll get you that same list (or perhaps a newer version).
