Rudy's fading fast

Too bad.

It would have been great fun to see the Democratic presidential nominee do battle with Rudy Giuliani in the general election campaign.

It also would have been entertaining to see how the right-wingers in the Republican Party cope with the spectacle of having a thrice-married, pro-choice, pro-gay rights guy as their standard-bearer.

But it's not to be. Rudy is sinking like a stone and will be out of the race before Valentine's Day.

Meanwhile, let's all hope that Mike Huckabee wins the GOP nomination. That, too, would be big fun.

I'm not sure that would be so much fun. Religion is already much too big an issue in this country, and if Huckabee is the nominee, it's going to be even bigger. People will be debating which candidate is more "Christian."

Actually, that sounds good. As a skeptic, I think the more we talk about religion, the better. Religion plays a big part in politics. We should talk about it, talk about religious doctrine and history; most Americans, including most adherents of one faith or another, know little about the doctrines and histories of their denominations.

I agree with your last point. If most people knew all that was in the Bible, they'd be astonished. But to me it's still a disturbing trend. Religion is much more important in politics today than it was 20-30 years ago.
