The price of freedom

Blogs and other Web sites that don't screen or censor the comments they receive from among the great unwashed run the risk of publishing truly offensive remarks.

It happens on leftist and rightist sites alike.

Today, it happened on some leftish sites in reaction to news of a small chemical fire at the building in New York that houses Fox News.

Oooh! I can hardly wait.

As my intimate friends are well aware, The Rascal is a major player in the world of high finance, and I'm here to tell you that I'll soon be basing my investment strategies on the stuff I learn from watching Fox Business News.

The folks at Fox are so reliable and accurate when it comes to reporting politics, I figure they'll be terrific in covering business.

Check out this teaser:

Fox News accuses U.S. generals of betrayal

Wow. The right-wingers who have taken it upon themselves to protect American military leaders against criticism suddenly have a huge workload.

You already know about the big dustup over the MoveOn.org ad in The New York Times that dissed Gen. David Petraeus. And we've told you about the episodes involving Rush Limbaugh (here) and American Conservative magazine (here). Well, now Fox News has waxed treasonous with sharp criticism of our valiant military leaders.

Retired Army Col. David Hunt, a military analyst for Fox News, has written a piece for the network's Web site in which he declares: "Our generals are betraying our soldiers..."

The headline on the essay pulls no punches: "Top Military Officials are a Disgrace to Those They Lead."

Isn't it strange that in the few short days since Congress approved resolutions condemning the MoveOn.org ad for daring to question Petraeus, we've had this rash of denunciations of American troops and their leaders by conservatives?

Christian and Islamic fundamentalists are equally nutty on the issue of human origins

A new study based on public surveys in the United States, Japan and 32 European countries shows that only the Turks rank lower than Americans in public acceptance of evolution.

The story on the Fox News Web site (yeah, really, Fox News) explains the sorry situation thusly:

Among the factors contributing to America's low score are poor understanding of biology, especially genetics, the politicization of science and the literal interpretation of the Bible by a small but vocal group of American Christians, the researchers say.

"American Protestantism is more fundamentalist than anybody except perhaps the Islamic fundamentalists, which is why Turkey and we are so close," said study co-author Jon Miller of Michigan State University.

I wonder if your typical American Christian creationist knows of his or her philosophical kinship on this matter with your typical raging Islamist toting an AK-47.

Nutty rightists praying for another 9/11

OK, I'm taking a break from my brief break to pass along this stuff about the hopes among the loonies at Fox News and at other rightward precincts that we'll soon have another 9/11 to teach us a lesson about something or other.

Is there no end to their depravity?

When pigs fly

Both CBS and Fox have rejected this commercial for condoms, the latter on grounds that it will accept such ads when the pitch is to prevent disease but not when the message is to prevent pregnancy.

What think ye?

Why does Fox News hate our troops?

The people at Fox News can't find much time to cover America's glorious adventure in Iraq.

For their sake, Frank Manzullo had better not hear about this (see below).

How can this be?

The latest Fox News poll shows that more Republicans than Democrats approve of the job the Democratic-controlled Congress is doing.

Well, that's because antiwar Democrats are disappointed in the recent vote by Congress to approve funding of the Iraq war without setting a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Another surprise in the Fox poll is that almost half of the Republican respondents consider Democrat Barack Obama "honest and trustworthy," and two-thirds of them consider him "likeable."

But, of course, they all look alike

I'm a little late with this, but it's still worth a big smirk:

It appears that the geniuses at Fox News, unable to distinguish one black person from another, showed video of Rep. John Conyers during a report on the indictment of Rep. William Jefferson.

Typical Fox News watcher: Duh!

A new poll shows that regular viewers of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" and regular readers of newspapers are more knowledgeable on national affairs than are regular watchers of the Fox News Channel.

Moreover, survey results showed more Republicans than Democrats in the least-aware group of respondents.

Of course, readers of The Rockford Rascal are far too few to have been included in the poll, but they doubtless would have acquitted themselves well.
