More on the breakup of the Republican coalition

Some of the stuff I had here and here in recent days is touched upon in this newer wrapup from Kos, but it also has other stuff on the matter.

Take the time. It's the most important political story of the winter so far. The race for the Republican presidential nomination could well spark a civil war in party ranks, and that could significantly effect the national political scene for years.

The Party of Lincoln, as some people call it, is about to go through another one of its historic changes.

The Evangelical Crackup

Back from a few days in California, where I looked in on an ailing brother (he's doing fine after a scary episode, thanks), I'm catching up on some good reading, including this piece from The New York Times Magazine about disunity on the religious right.

Religious fanatics disrupt U.S. Senate

I told you last night of the fuss among some right-wing Christians over the news that a Hindu cleric would deliver the opening invocation today in the U.S. Senate.

Well, the invocation was delivered, but only after the cops hauled off several self-described "Christian patriots" who had shouted their disapproval.

It's scary to think that there actually are millions of Americans who want religious freedom only for themselves -- which, of course, isn't freedom at all.

POSTSCRIPT: The virtuous adventures of a few other Christian patriots are reported here.

"Pro-family" busybodies are disgusting!

The Religious Right declares itself deeply offended by the official White House photo of Dick and Lynne Cheney and the infant son of their lesbian daughter, Mary.

These people have a lot of nerve calling themselves "pro-family." There should be a special place in hell for their sort.

Another Vonnegut quote

When author Kurt Vonnegut died the other day, we posted a few quotes from him, and now we've gleaned another from bartcop.com.

Vonnegut offered this observation just a few years ago:

"I myself feel that our country, for whose Constitution I fought in a just war, might as well have been invaded by Martians and body snatchers. Sometimes I wish it had been. What has happened, though, is that it has been taken over by means of the sleaziest, low-comedy, Keystone Cops-style coup d’etat imaginable. And those now in charge of the federal government are upper-crust C-students who know no history or geography, plus not-so-closeted white supremacists, aka 'Christians,' and plus, most frighteningly, psychopathic personalities."

UPDATE: OK, one more Vonnegut quote: "Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand."
